Catering on an oil rig is as you might expect very similar to any other catering provider in an industrial environment.

If you have been involved in catering in a 24 hour factory, a remote mine or in the forces you will have a good idea of what to expect in offshore catering.

One main difference is that, the food supplies to a rig arrive by boat. So, if you run out of something or forget to order an item, you can not then easily get it. If you run out of a vital food like milk, you can use the option to have some put on the next crew change helicopter. Usually every two days or more depending on the size of the installation.. Otherwise, you will just have to make do without, until the next boat delivery which could be a week or more after placing the order.

On many rigs, the catering crew are also responsible for all other hotel duties such as laundry and general housekeeping. On-board, the catering team usually includes general staff, bakers, cooks and a manager (often called the Camp Boss).
